CATANIA

Dear tourist,
as soon as you land, you will be guided by the trail of the intoxicating scents of our land; from the airport you will arrive at our hotel, and it is from here that your holiday in Catania and on the island of Sicily will begin.

We welcome you with some tips about the city that greets you, Catania, the city of dark stone, which we are sure will steal your heart.

Duomo Square

Piazza Duomo is the city's main square, built after the 1693 earthquake it is the heart of Catania. There are many monuments on the square and next to it: the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the city's cathedral, the Palazzo degli Elefanti, seat of the City Hall, the Amenano fountain, from which you reach the Fish Market, while at the center of the square stands the elephant fountain.

Ursino Castle

Ursino Castle (Piazza Federico di Svevia) was built at the behest of Frederick II between 1239 and 1250 as a defensive project; in fact, at the time it stood on a promontory surrounded by the sea. The castle is the undisputed symbol of imperial authority and power.

Fishmonger

The fish market of Catania is the ancient fish market; only by trying this experience can one realize how picturesque this market can be, comparable only to its twin market, the Vucciria of Palermo.

The stalls have been located since the early nineteenth century in the tunnel dug in the sixteenth century beneath the Palace of the Seminary of Clerics and the walls of Charles V, opposite the Arches of the Marina, once immersed in the waters of the small fishermen’s harbor below, now filled in and turned into public green space.

Included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List, the Benedictine Monastery (Piazza Dante Alighieri, 32) is a jewel of late Sicilian Baroque. The former monastic complex was recognized by the Sicilian Region as a Work of Contemporary Architecture and since 1977 has been home to the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. It is possible to visit the Monastery every hour. If you are interested, ask at reception, which will provide you with all the information.

Piazza Stesicoro is among the busiest squares in the historic center, its central location and its closeness to the typical market “Fera o’ Luni” make it the hub of the city. The monument towering at the center of the Square was created in 1882 by Giulio Monteverde and is dedicated to the Catanian composer Vincenzo Bellini.
